All about References and Referees asked for in MBA entrance GDPI phase Normally the question will say “Provide us with the contact details of a referee who can inform us about your ability and achievement.” Do they contact the Referees… Mostly no but why take the risk!! 1 1. Why they need reference check Conducting reference checks can be one of the most important steps in the selection process. Since past performance is often the best indicator of future performance, references allows college / company to talk to past supervisors in order to determine if the applicant being considered is suited for the role. Reference checking allows colleges to ensure that they are finding the most qualified person who is also a good match for the position. By conducting reference checks, college can avoid costs associated with failed probation periods and poor performance, which can impact college’s and damage your image or reputation. 2. Family member as a reference check Please do not list any family members or friends as your referee, references from such referees will not be entertained. For example you wrote: Rajesh kumar gupta as your referee and your name is Ramesh kumar gupta… It sounds dubious.. he might be your father or uncle in big company but avoid it. 3. Who can be the reference Non working people: 1. Referee can be a professor at your college 2. Professor you have worked under in your college or some other college (projects) 3. Employee / Manager of a company with whom / where you have done a project / internship 4. Part time faculty at your college who also works in the industry 5. HOD of your college department (Best thing if he is ready to give) Working professionals: 1. Your manager at the organisation you have worked for or a supervisor of the project you have worked on. 2. Senior person in your organisation, with whom you have not worked but can show a link. (You work in marketing and showing referee as Finance department manager will work as you can claim you have worked in a multi domain project) 3. Referee can be a professor at your college 4. Professor you have worked under in your college or some other college (projects) 5. Employee / Manager of a company with whom / where you have done a project / internship 6. Part time faculty at your college who also works in the industry 7. Dont ask your immediate boss but someone in other department who is atleast one level above you at the company. 4.
