Few Aspects of CAT!

CAT Exam
Knowing how to traverse through a paper is an important skill-set in the CAT. This is particularly true of the computer-based version, as in the paper-based versions one has luxury of choosing the order of the sections, sub-sections etc while attempting a paper. To be selective on choosing the questions in CAT helps one maximize scores and attempts. Another way to move on with CAT test is to begin from question-1, solve if doable, else go to the questions. Now the scene is that you have limited choice of selection and will need to judiciously pick the right question one after the other and will need to avoid wasting time. The strategy The success mantra to achieve the high sectional as well as high over percentile in CAT lies in your strategy to choose the right question to avoid any negative marking and thereby saving your score from going down. Let us look at a few aspects in this post: Start well: Lots of guys start sluggishly and then start sweating by the end of 10th minute. Plan to fly off the blocks with feverish intensity. You cannot go much wrong with that strategy. To complete with a cricket metaphor. Start like Sehwag, finish like Dhoni. Go berserk in the first few minutes, turn savvy (calculating) half way through the paper. Question selection has to be dynamic: A student does not have the luxury of saying “let me look at the questions in different categories and figure out which ones work best for me.” The decision-making will have to be on the fly. This is why sections like DI and LR work as ‘fillers’. If quant is tough, one has to look at cracking DI to anchor the section. Similarly, if 2 RC passages are vague, one needs to get all 9-10 correct in LR. Improve the speed: ‘Practice more to improve speed’. The challenge to choose the right question with a speedy reading habit solely depends upon the ability of the aspirants. Since no CAT aspirant goes to solve all the questions in all the sections, it’s better to improve the speed within the allotted time by practicing more and more. This strategy of preparation for CAT during next 65 days will not only boost the confidence level of the candidates but also will improve the speed. Accuracy goes with right choice: If you select the right and doable question, your accuracy level will improve else it will go down. You can attain high accuracy level only when your reading speed is improved with clear understanding. When you opt for an answer option you should be clear on it. Else the negative marking may get you nowhere. Non-MCQs need clarity of concept: CAT is going to place Non-MCQ type questions along with MCQs. To solve a Non-MCQ you need clarity of concept as the question will not be followed by answer option. You can write the answer only when your concepts are clear and you have practiced more. In your preparation include also such type of topics and questions that had appeared long back in CAT and the questions which never appeared in CAT but have made their presence in other tests like XAT, MAH-CET, IIFT, and CMAT. Everyone needs the odd confidence-booster: Let’s face it, skipping all dicey questions is good in theory, but it does make one nervous. And sometimes, every now and then you will find yourself in a position where you have skipped 4 in a row and then you face a time-consuming, boring question in linear equations. In order to get your confidence going, you might have to set aside 4.5 minutes to crack this. This is ok. Leave well, leave early: Carrying on with the cricket metaphor here (suddenly realized that there are quite a few parallels). As for the first round of attempts is concerned, if you do not get the method straight away, skip the question. When you are taking mock CATs and analyzing them, have a good luck at questions that took you spent more than 4.5 minutes on and figure out how you got suckered into these. If you take 8 minutes for a question, it hardly matters whether you got it right – it’s a bad call. Beat these time-sinks down aggressively.
