Every exam from CAT to CET contains vocab. Every exam including The Common Admission Test (CAT 2016) measures verbal & logical reasoning, critical thinking & quantitative aptitude and Data intrepretation skills. Verbal ability section contains questions based on Reading Comprehension passages, Paragraph Completion, Sentence Correction, Vocabulary Usage and Para Jumbles, you will come across many difficult words. The single most effective way to improve your verbal score on the English section is to improve your vocabulary. Therefore, a Good Vocabulary is vital for a high score and a MUST for the CAT other exams. Learning vocab can, however, be tricky. If we don’t know the best way to retain new words, we can forget what we’ve learned. In this article ,i have described some of the quickest, most intelligent way to improve vocabulary i.e learning roots and usauage of mnemonics. 1. Learning through roots ie breakup of words Don’t just memorize. Achieve mastery. Ditch the flash cards and stop memorizing definitions. A smart way to build vocab is to learn how to use roots effectively. Much of the English language comes from Latin, with a huge chunk from languages, like French and Spanish, which derive from Latin roots. If you know these Latin roots, you can get a huge leg up piecing together the meaning of a word even if you’ve never seen it before. Example: Think of the words translation, transition, transformation, and transportation.They all start with ‘trans’. So if you know the meaning of these words, you can tell that ‘trans’ must have something to do with changing from one thing or place to another. Then if you get an unfamiliar word, like transubstantiation, you’ve got at least a hint about what it might mean. art (skill) is the root of artistic auto (self) is the root word of automatic.
