How To Prepare For Quantitative Ability Section – CAT Preparation

CAT Exam
Quantitative Ability Test Section is the most scoring area of CAT examination. Many students are able to comfortably score good in CAT examination, due to good performance in this subject alone. Candidate should try to make this area as his strongest area if one wants to score 100%ile in CAT examination. Follow these 7 simple tips. They can go a long way in improving your score in CAT – Quant Section. 1. Use the relevant material: Always Remember, Less is More. A lot of students waste their time on books that are too difficult or not relevant for the CAT. There is no need to master all the CAT related books, or those 800+ pages books, that fill your brain with so much material, that you cannot retain anything at all. There is limited time, and it is practice to one or two books 5 times than reading 5 books once or less. Start with the regular tests, and keep only one reference book for every section. You can choose on your own. You can refer past year papers to reach out on an idea for which book to refer. 2. Practice Problems Daily: A lot of people are good at Quant because they retain well. And retention comes by practice. Make it a habit of solving about 50 questions daily. You can pick a topic or mix them up from different sections. Just be sure, that you finish the test in less than 50 mins. This means you need to learn. 3. Manage Your Time: CAT paper is all about proper planning. You have to spend the least amount of time to get the maximum marks. Do not take 1 min equally for all the questions. Try to finish questions using shortcuts, wherever possible. The extra time you save here will be used in questions, where the question is lengthy or difficult. And you can achieve this only by practice. Set your timer according to the number of questions, every time you take a quant test. 4. Analyze the Options: Before you use your pen, think about the options. This is especially helpful in quant sections. Can you eliminate a few answers? Practice this. Soon you will find, this method works beautifully, and you get answers without fully solving the questions. 5. Use Approximations: CAT is checking your math skills in the Quantitative ability section. Remember that this is a race against time. Unless the options are really close to each other, it is better to get an approximate answer and pick the closest option. This will help you increase your speed and let you save those extra crucial minutes. 6. Past year Papers: Past year papers give a taste of the real exam. Do them with a timer. Practice to finish the quant section in less than 60 minutes. Review your answers. Analyze your weak areas and work upon them. You can identify different types of ideas on which questions are based. 7. Relax and Hit Quant Section with Ease: This is my success mantra. Our brain performs the best when it is relaxed. Stay calm, and attempt quant section carefully, as this section in the start of CAT examination. The brain goes into panic mode when it sees only half an hour left and many questions are yet to do. So try to finish each question as per the time it requires or as the strategy you decided prior in the mock tests. It is better to gain the extra advantage through mock test than to face mismanagement in time at the exam center. Follow The Tips and Stay Focused!! All The Best!!
