How to plan your TISS preparation

Step 1 By heart the paper pattern and cutoffs

TISS-NET is conducted across 39 centres in India. Besides the main programme, It is the pre-requisite for admissions into MA in Human Resource Management, the flagship course at TISS Mumbai. TISS also offers numerous programmes in the areas of social work, health, management, development, etc. through its centres at Mumbai, Tuljapur (Rural Maharashtra), Guwahati and Hyderabad.

Step 2: Quant and Logic Section 60 minutes for 30 questions

Break of 30 questions was like Quant 14 questions, DI 8 questions and Logic 8 questions) Like last year, a lot of questions were based on modern math and arithmetic. The questions on arithmetic were by and large easy and should have all been attempted. There were 8 LR questions and all of them were mostly based on number series. Some of the questions were tricky. The DI questions were of easy to moderate level.

Step 3: Verbal Ability – 25 minutes enough time for 30 questions

This section comprised 30 questions, out of which there 15 questions were based on Vocab and only 5 reading comprehension. There were questions on analogies, single fill in the blanks, double fill in the blanks, question on Antonyms, finding error in the sentence, double fill in the blanks based on homonyms, questions on matching idiom pairs, questions on odd man out and on meaning of idioms. Out of the 5 reading comprehension questions, 3 were of easy level and two were of medium level. The passage was about 800 words long and dealt with ‘creation of personal blog/website by celebrities’. Most of the questions in this section were of an easy to moderate level.

Step 4: GK Section 40 questions and 15 minutes

Main deciding factor of TISS exam is GK. This section comprised 40 questions, each carrying 1 mark. Out of the 40 questions, there were 22 on static ones and 18 on current affairs. There were around 13 questions on international affairs and 27 related to national ones. About 16 questions were easy, 10 were medium and 14 difficult. A score of 16 would be a good benchmark. Attempting all GA questions would not have taken more than 15 minutes.

The TISS Guwahati campus has been established with support from the Ministry of Development of North-Eastern Region (MDONER), Govt. Of India. The Campus is expected to benefit students from the 8 States of the region.
66% of the seat will be proportionately distributed amongst the 8 North-Eastern States. Seats allocated will follow the Reservation Norms of that state. 34% of the seats from rest of India. Exam pattern and rounds of TISSNET 2016:-
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences NET (National Entrance Test) is an online test held in basically two parts:

I Part:
The first part of the paper consists of objective type question on the following main sections:
Section A: Analytical and Numerical Ability (15 Questions)
Section B: Language Ability (20 Questions) and
Section C: Awareness of General and Social Issues (15 Questions)

II Part:
This part of the exam consists of analysis based questions to be solved in 60 minutes. This includes case lets and programme based questions and this is followed by a 20 minute Group Discussion to be completed in the given time frames by all the candidates. It has basically four sections covering the following topics under it:
I Section: DI (Data Interpretation) – 20 Questions
II Section: DS (Data Sufficiency) – 20 Questions
III Section: Reading Comprehension – 20 Questions and
IV Section: Business Knowledge and Foundation of Management—15 Questions

Marking Scheme for TISS:
The candidates will be given one mark for each correct answer attempted by them. There will be no negative marking in the Tata Institute of Social Sciences Entrance Exam.Total Distribution of Marks:
National Common Written Test: 100 Marks
Interview Test/ Group Discussion: 50 Marks
Personal Interview: 75 Marks
Total Marks Allotted: 225 Marks
Timing of Exam: 2 pm to 3:40 pm

TISSNET 2016 exam analysis:-
TISS was of easy to moderate difficulty level. The entrance exam for Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai for the MA in Human Resource programme was of 1 hour 40 minutes duration, conducted in computer based format. There were no section wise time limit and test takers were free to move to and fro across the sections. There was no negative marking scheme in the exam.

Maths Quant and Logical Reasoning analysis of TISS exam
This section included 35 questions of easy to moderate difficulty level. Majority of the questions were on the topics of Geometry Mensuration, Numerical/Word series and Odd One Out. The other topics included Venn Diagrams, Permutation & Combination, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Ratio and Proportion, Percentage, Trigonometry, Interest and Numbers. Few questions were confusing and tricky in nature which posed trouble for the test takers.

Verbal ability section analysis of TISSNET exam
This section had 30 questions of moderate to tough difficulty level. The questions were a mix between Reading Comprehension and English Usage. The RC questions were inference based. Majority of the questions were from Fill in the Blanks. The other topics from English Usage included Analogy, Paragraph Formation and Inappropriate Usage of Words. Questions from Paragraph Formation and vocabulary were of higher level of difficulty.

Analysis of TISS General Awareness GK section
The questions from this section were of moderate difficulty level. Unlike the earlier TISSNET General Awareness questions, the questions were generic in nature. The topics of the General Awareness questions included History, Civics, Sports, Books and Author, Art and Movies. History consisted of maximum number of questions followed by Civics, Sports, Arts and Literature.

Tips for cracking TISSNET 2016
• TISSNET 2016 is not just about Quantitative Aptitude and Logical Reasoning. It covers nearly 30% of the paper, and most probably trend will continue this year.
• Language ability and General Awareness questions will cover 70% of the question paper. Neglecting these two sections will be the biggest mistake one could ever make.
• Last year, Time allotted for these 50 marks was 45 minutes. Plus there was a written test for 1 hour. This year time is 1 hour and 40 minutes (100 minutes) for 100 marks and test will be objective only. Most probably there will be 100 questions in TISSNET.
• Difficulty level of questions is easy to moderate.
• Emphasis of your preparation should be clearing the basic concepts, and solving the mock questions for application of these concepts.
• Reading comprehension and grammar practice should be part of your daily preparation.
