——————————————————- Journey: From B’lore to Mumbai… reached on 1st afternoon..1 whole day … bad experience by the time i reached IIT B .. interview was the last thing on my mind. just wanted a quite room to sleep after the noisy crowd i had to travel with The Nite before. Refreshed by evening and dinner done. Met some other guys who were in the same slot as me.. gt abt chit chatting. Then it was 10pm and seniors invited us for an informal discussion. there were abt 7-8 seniors and fielded questions patiently.. above all instead of painting a rosy picture they gave us all the info and told us to make the decision….this went on till midnite.. then realised that i gotta grab some sleep ( which eventually i didnt get.. was sittin in bed from 4am waitin for the alarm to ring @ 5.30 am..) and returned to my room. SJMSOM IIT Bombay 2 The D-Day: Got ready…reached SOM building.. usual process of registration and presentation.. then my group was called for GD… Panel: Admissions co-ordinator, he is also an IT entrepreneur, thn 2 other ppl.. one doing his phd and 3rd an alumnus..only panel with 3 ppl… GD: It was a case study, HR kind in nature, abt a lady moved to a new division and nt given proper training..big sad story ( we nicknamed it Madhuri ki Kahani )… some questions at the end of it were to be discussed… In general, began well then we lost steam as the case didnt offer too many points ( we felt..).. enuff time to speak for all though few gentlemen took it upon themselves to speak for the grp always and then urge us nt to make a fish market … me came in 2-3 times with decent points…tried to resolve a couple of conflicts.. thats all… cd have spoken more but then didnt want to really get into a acrimonious discussion as it was becoming… eventually things sorted out well… General tip : dont attack the questions directly…look at the problem holistically… then set abt answering the ques… (yeh gyan mere kaam to nahi aaya…) PI: was waiting for nearly an hour for it as some guy wanted a reschedule coz of his flight and all… seniors were very helpful… ( 1 bottle paani khatam kar diya wahan !!!)… went in and here’s wat followed:P1– iit prof P2 — phd guy P3 — alumnus M — who else is left P1 — XXX company eh ??? wat kinda product development do u do ??? M — started with a disclaimer that i was travellin so cdnt really keep a tab on the budget but still wd answer to best of my knowledge… then gyan for next 5 mins… tld abt cut in excise duties which has made industry happy P3 — ( gr8 entry) which industry… M — manufacturing.. P3 — which section of manufacturing ?? M — automobiles to be specific… P2 — asked abt the changed taxation and all… M — told .. P1 — u said u hv nt followed the budget properly still u are tellin us most of the things… M — tld him abt my habit of watchin budget speeches and all … ( i think they gt my point..) M — talked abt nuclear… hydro .. P2– nt hydro and all…wat abt the future… M — fuel cells ka gyan.. stressed on scientific capability to develop such fuels P3 — (again interjecting!!) do u think these are viable solns ? electric cars and all..after all we are still polluting the environment to get that electricity… M — agreed with him ..said only finding the fuels is nt the soln but ppl shd be more active for eco friendly initiatives..talked abt car poolin and proper public transport… quoted swaminathan at a couple of places… P1 — u r electrical rite ? so i cant ask from satellite engg.. P1 — do u want to ask us anything ? M — asked abt the staff … and aviation mgmt programme they are gonna start.. All Ps smile back.. took that as an indication to leave ..gt up and came out …. big sigh of relief… Cheers!!!! ——————————————————- p>Just a day before, i met few guys during IIM L interview, who had their interviews for SJMSOM and came to know about the WAT topic that was something like “Is congestion tax really helpful in removing congestion?”. I was totally blank after hearing this and expected same kind of bouncer on my day. But surprisingly the topic given to us was “Describe an artist/band who have successfully established their business and how?” – a sigh of relief 🙂 i wrote a short story about ‘Metallica’ and their USPs. The second WAT topic was a case study that was to be concluded in 3 lines or in 50 words (strictly) that was something related with PEST analysis of Modern India’s progress story. Then after document verification and a long wait in the chilling Waiting hall my turn came for interview. There were 2 professors P1 (Engg. Physics Professor from IIT B) and P2 (Senior Professor from Humanities dept SJMSOM) Q1: P1 asked for my documents and by the same time P2 made me sit comfortably and asked for my introduction Me: I started with my same story again, was suddenly stopped and told So You are from MP, the state which shares it boundaries with max. no of states. I said Yes Sir. Q2: Can you pls tell me quickly with how many states?? Me: Was not sure about the number of states and started counting from UP, CG, Rajasthan, then again interrupted and told tell me the number only dont count. OK my next question. Q3: Ok so why there is a drop between your class X and class XII marks.? Me: Told about the IIT JEE reason that i was focused towards clearing JEE, and so focused less towards school studies. Q4: Hmm but don’t you think you could not have faced this situation if you have studied a bit more? Me: Yes sir, i agree i could have managed that properly. Q5: OK so how were you placed, Off campus or On campus?? Me: Sir, On Campus, Tech Mahindra came for recruitment in MANIT. P1: Ok Ok, MANIT means that REC from Bhopal right. Me: Yes Sir P2: OK so tell me about what all do you do after you start your working hours? Me: Told the complete story and then followed a series of questions from my work, P2 told me to explain everything in layman’s language and it went for around 5 mins non stop, then suddenly P1 came in… P1: Can you tell me the number of seats in the lower house..?? Ans: Sir 500 sumthing… I could not recall. P1: OK Leave it, who is the governor of MP? Me: No answer for 2 secs… P1: Ok leave it, tell me if you were assigned a state level managerial position and you have to suggest the CM to change something, what will you tell him to do. This is a do or die question for you. Me: Sir, as MP being called as the heart of india with Bhopal as its official capital and Indore as the commercial capital of MP having an IIT and an IIM and an emerging education hub in the central india, i would like Mr Shiv Raj Singh Chauhan to focus more towards education sector in MP as we have infrastructure available we just need focus from the state to provide R&D opportunities and help in better placements in colleges, currently Mr Shiv Raj is focused more towards bringing business, promoting IT, making more SEZs, etc P1& P2: Ok thanks, you may leave now.. Me: Thank you sir, Thank you sir. ————————————————– Group Task: Topic : “Can ethics and success go hand-in-hand..” 3 examples were given, that of Lalit Modi(IPL Scam) Some Cisco CEO’s tactics(ethical 1) Bill Gates lie towards the end of his term For the first time ever in my life, I started the GT.. And gave valid points in between.. Our group had the least number of candidates.. 8/14 (6 absent).. So, all in all it was a healthy discussion..!! Overall, GT was quite gud for me.. Personal Interview: A complete SHOCKER for me.. I was the 2nd last person in my group(13/14).. and ll the people in my group were havin chilled out PI’s.. But, when my turn came, they took a stress interview for me.. I wasn’t allowed to answer ny questions fully.. Whenever I tried to answer a question properly, they would fire the next question.. Questions from Maths, B.E. Syllabus, to current affairs.. Also, they were kinda trying to “CONFUSE” me a lotttttt.. LIKE 1 typical example I’ll give.. They asked me the current ranking of Saina Nehwal (as I had mentioned Badminton in my extra-currics).. I said 5.. Ma’am said its 37.. (which can’t be).. Then, Sir 1 said its not 5, but less than 5.. I said 6,7.. Then, Sir 2 said that “Sir is telling you it’s less than 5”, how can 6,7 be less than 5.. Then, I changed my answer to 4.. But, later I again thought that in rankings, 4 will be higher than 5 & NOT LESS.. so, I said 6..et al.. blah blah blah Overall, PI was a complete disaster for me.. lets see what happens..!!!! P.S. : Later found out that Saina Nehwal’s latest World-Ranking is 3 after her win in the Swiss Open 2 days ago..!!!!!!!!! heheheh ————————————————– Accommodation / Campus: 1. They provide accommodation in hostel # 9, but I stayed out of the campus. 2. They had arranged food stalls, so I was able to take something as I could not take my lunch. 3. The campus is very well maintained and the feeling of “IIT” is there. The students were good and helpful. 4. We had a presentation first, and then GD/PI started. 5. One down point was that they had asked us to make arrangement to stay for two days, but the process was to get finished in 4-5 hours only. So, one day wasted, as it is difficult to get reservations in Tatkal for all trains. Interview: 1. Our group had PI first, followed by GD. 2. Panel consisted of 3 persons, including the HOD of the department. 3. Question asked were: 4. Description about work experience 5. What did you study in economics during engineering 6. Economics was in which semester in your college? 7. Who is the professor of economics in your college 8. Solve the given problem from calculus 9. Some questions from chemistry, as I am a chemical engineer 10. Fortunately, I was able to answer satisfactorily to all questions. Group Discussion: 1. Panel was of three members and one member kept time. 2. We sat around rectangular table 3. Topic: “MBA in India is highly over rated”. 4. We were given 2 minutes each to speak individually, and then discuss for around five minutes. 5. The initial 2 minutes time was OK, after that everyone enjoyed in the fish market condition. Invigilators relieved when we stopped J 6. I was not able to do good due to the fish market condition. This is common to all in the group. ——————————————————- This is the account of my GD/PI experience. Place: SJMSOM, IIT Bombay I reached there 30 minutes late, by the time the presentation was over, but I could manage to make up, as the process had not started. We were given an application form to fill up, and we had to verify the documents and submit the attested zerox copies. Some students, who didn’t bring some zerox or attestation, were asked to do this later. So better to go all prepared. 30-40% of the people present had met me at IIT Kanpur GD/PI also, so it was strange feeling to see them again. GD: —– It was a case study, where a university is facing problems as the students are downloading videos and doing illegal downloads from restricted websites, in the turn making the connectivity very slow and the college is receiving complaints also. We had to prepare a policy for that. 5 minutes to mote down points. Then we were allowed to speak for 1 minute individually at the beginning, at random order being called by them. At the end, there was 4-5 minutes of open GD. GD was not a fishmarket, but only 3-4 people could speak because of time constraints. PI —– Panel: 1. VGSOM Professor –same who was in GD 2. Lady from HR – same who was in GD 3. Another person who just watched. – New The questions asked were like this: (They glanced through my forms, SOPs etc through out the interview…) Your schooling was all done at …., your home town? It is in ….. And then you did BE from …… What are your work experiences? OK, you worked at …. (He knew the company and place). The company has another plant at ….. What are the different types of products of your company… Tell full form of all.. What is the chemical composition of … ? Was that job plant based or what? Why did you change your job? (So this one doesn’t involve getting dirty… Good…) What are your present job responsibilities… (in detail) Why do you want to do MBA? Will you remain in the same core industry, or change to other management streams? (Now the lady from HR asks) How was the GD? (I said, I could not speak well in the later part) Why couldn’t you speak? (Explained that several people were speaking at the same time) In group conditions it happens, you should make your way in… (Explained..) (Now the lady gives the papers to the prof.) Are you taking part in games and sports, or left all.. What are your interests… (I detailed my co-curricular activities in my college… They seemed impressed) OK, Thank you. Time: Around 10-15 minute (I didn’t keep watch over time) They looked cool, and impression was good. But they didn’t go deep anywhere. For me too like many other people, it seemed that the decision for selection was mostly made before the interview. From : Kumar Rahul ——————————————————- IITR Accommodation / Campus: 1. They have provided nice accommodation @Rs 100/- per bed (Rs 200 per room). There was no problem, and I enjoyed my stay there. 2. They had arranged food stalls, so I was able to take something as I could not take my lunch. 3. The campus is very well maintained, and compared to some other IITs where there is wastage of land, here the departments and hostels are adjacent, but the campus is still very big. 4. The department of management studies is a two stories building. 5. In short, they provide what ever they claim on their website. Group Discussion: 1. At the start of the GD, the asked us to be original, and not to “represent your coaching institutes”. “Don’t flood us with data and statistics, just express your views”. 2. Panel was of two members and we sat in semi-circular arrangement. 3. We were given two topics, we had to choose one after discussion for 2 minutes. We discussed on the topic related to Management education in India, and left the topic “Do NGOs in India really work for others or work for their vested interests?” We had a clear consensus in a moment. 4. It was a fish market most of the time. 5. There were people who didn’t stop talking, making mockery of the group dynamics. 6. Time for discussion: 08 minutes. 7. Persons in panel: 9 8. The panel interrupted us two times, and asked one person to speak at a time. But after a while, there was again fish market. 9. Suggestion: Prevent a fish market situation. It pulls everyone down. Interview: 1. Panel was of three members, perhaps the HOD was in the panel too. 2. There were three panels with simultaneous interviews going on. 3. This was a cool interview. They asked about: 4. about my name 5. about my state of residence, condition there 6. full form for some abbreviations 7. It was a general interview, where questions were asked based on the student profile only, and they ask some GK questions to change the mood. 8. Suggestion: Be yourself, and stay cool. I have taken reference from some of my previous posts, but when compiled as a whole, this will help some of PGies: First Document verification: They ask your form, bio-sketch, work-ex writeup and work-ex certificates. There you sign the attendance sheet. In the attendance sheet at the time of registration and document verification, make sure to notice the First column – Serial number and Second column – Merit number. This is your new merit position. And don’t lose heart if it has slide; this new rank will not last long J GD: The panel first writes down the criterion for evaluation of the GD on the white board. This is usual stuff like: ability to communicate clearly, ability to analyze, ability to participate in group, etc. They write two topics on board, after discussion (we had voting by raising hands) we have to decide one in 2 minutes, then we get 2 minutes to note points, and then one of the panel members gives signal to start. We had two topics, which I know was repeated from some groups because I met one guy who knew the topics and was preparing for that. 1. Morals and values among Indians is degenerating. 2. Government control in higher education is interfering and not required. We had fish market through out, but the panel never interrupted us. In a group of 12, only 2-3 were able to make them heard, and these were the guys who spoke violently. I always had a belief that you can win in a gentlemanly manner, but here I repented. Several times you get into the condition that 4 people are speaking. And at those moments the panel members were looking and listening to the guy with the loudest and most clear voice. May be they had accepted fish market as a way of life. So my take is, persist, don’t expect the panel members to intervene to your rescue. Play “their” game! PI: PI consists of general stuff, and is profile based. One thing common is the inclination towards economy and finance. 1. Describe yourself. 2. Tell us about your work experience. 3. How your educations of a chemical engineer help you in management profession? 4. Why do you want to do MBA? 5. What are your hobbies and extra curricular activities? 6. Do you read chemical engineering journals, which one? 7. Do you take interests in the financial scenario also? 8. What is the condition of the present economy? 9. Some times in our professional job, we have to compromise in personal integrity. Will you compromise and to what extent? 10. Do you know about one company in the south, named …(?)… which is very famous for its ethical policies? Duration: 12-15 minutes. Misc posts : In the attendance sheet at the time of registration and document verification, First column – Serial number Second column – Merit number In my form, they cut the “merit number” by a blue pen, to avoid panic among students. But the printed words make it clear. I hope there is no doubt now. The moderators don’t ask our names or anything. They say “all the best” and write down the criterion on the white board. This is usual stuff like: ability to communicate clearly, ability to analyze, ability to participate in group, etc. No, I didn’t notice that. Any way, by now that rank doesn’t matter. I wish all of us all the best! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ From : Akshat Jain Hello Friends I appeared for GD/PI conducted by IIT-Kanpur/Madras/Roorkee. Here is my Experience. IIT Roorkee GD: “ROLE OF ETHICS IN BUSINESS” First introduse urself and then two minutes to think and ten minutes for discussion.Group of 14 students. PI: very cool.No technical questions.
