Whatever opinion you have, however, you cannot escape from grammar; it is in every sentence you read or write, speak or hear. We solve maths questions using formulas while we solve verbal questions using common sense; Which makes the accuracy low in grammar. Presented here are 6 formulas which will help you solve grammar like maths with 100% accuracy. Sentence Correction So what exactly are these questions? In these questions, a sentence has been divided into different parts and you have to identify the error in them. Formulas for solving Grammar based questions: Formula 1 – Parts of Speech: Notice that the different parts like adjective, adverb, nouns, pronouns, conjunctions, interjections, verbs are correctly used. For example
  • Incorrect: He plays real good.
  • Correct: He plays really well.
Formula 2 – Subject Verb Agreement: The subject should agree with the verb. For a singular subject we will use a singular verb and for a plural subject we will use a plural verb. For example:
  • Incorrect: A number of colorful objectswas displayed in the store window.
  • Correct: A number of colorful glass vaseswere displayed in the store window.
Formula 3 – Parallelism: The different words in the sentence, performing the same function should be in the same format. For example:
  • Incorrect: All business students should learn word processing, accounting, and how to program computers.
  • Correct: All business students should learn word processing, accounting, and computer programming.
Formula 4 – Modifiers: A modifier is any word or phrase which modifies the subject. The modifier has to be placed next to the subject it modifies. For example:
  • Incorrect: Covered in mud, Akshay helped the puppy.
  • Correct: Covered in mud, the puppy was helped by Akshay.
Formula 5 – Diction: Use of the correct words in the correct place. For example:
  • Incorrect: See you latter.
  • Correct: See you later.
Formula 6 – Redundancy: Avoid needless repetition of the same idea. For example:
  • Incorrect: Please return back my dress.
  • Correct: Please return my dress.
Let’s look at a few examples where you can implement these formulas: Example 1: The President of Costa Rica, along with two vice-presidents, are elected for a four-year term by the people.
  1. Are elected for a four-year term by the people.
  2. Are elected, by the people, for a four-year term.
  3. Is elected for a four-year term by the people.
  4. Are elected for four-year terms by the people.
  5. Is elected for four-year terms by the people.
Example 2: Previously thought to have been extinct, a team of biologists rediscovered the New Caledonia crested gecko in 1994.
  1. A team of biologists rediscovered the New Caledonia crested gecko in 1994.
  2. A team of biologists, in 1994, rediscovered the New Caledonia crested gecko.
  3. In 1994 the New Caledonia crested gecko was rediscovered by a team of biologists.
  4. And discovered by a team of biologists in 1994 was the New Caledonia crested gecko.
  5. The New Caledonia crested gecko was rediscovered by a team of biologists in 1994.
Solution: 1. Here, the answer will be option 3 as it uses the correct the subject verb agreement rule that with “The President” the singular verb “is” will be used. 2. The correct answer is option 5 as the modifier extinct is used for the New Caledonia crested gecko and not the team of biologists.
