As we know that The IIMs haven’t disclosed a pre-set syllabus for the VARC section. So, it is little difficult for aspirants to crack the VARC easily but we can safely deduce the topics that are tested in the VARC section by analysing the previous year CAT questions. Today we will discuss that how long it would take for one to get comfortable with them.
First try to understand why this VARC section is. Actually, The Reading Comprehension section in CAT is to test whether the aspirant has a great habit of reading or not. So, we should develop a sound strategy to prepare for the reading comprehension section for CAT and other MMA entrance exam is the practice of habitual reading.
Some tips to prepare for this section: –
- Inculcate the habit of reading. Aspirant should try to invest 1-2 hours of reading every day. When we read daily some articles or blog or editorials, our reading ability improve.
- We should not stick to some special topics but read from a diverse collection of topics. It may occur that we unknowingly or sometimes for our convenience we choose to read some topics which are easy to read, but it will not help us. So read the topics on diverse topics.
- Understand the underlying ideas. We should develop the habit of understanding the underlying ideas from the context of the passage. Don’t read for just reading shake but read the passage to understand the ideas.
- DO NOT STICK TO A QUESTION! Don’t spend too much time on one question. This is a blunder mistake and can cost you a lot. So, it is better to move on next question if you find it difficult to solve. Try to maximize your attempts. See because accuracy of 90-100% is difficult to achieve, so improve your score by maximizing attempts.
- We can alternately try 1 RC and then can solve a few questions of VA. We may get bored if you try to solve all RCs first so you may solve alternately 1RCs and then may go on VA and come back to RC and so on, to neutralize. It may help you to get out of boredom which you may feel while attempting RC.
CAT Reading Comprehension section is to test whether the student has a reading habit or not and do they have the analyzing capability.
- Read articles or essay from a magazine, book, newspaper or novel every day to understand your Reading Comprehension abilities. You can rad from so many sources like aeon essays, the guardian , editorial and many more .
- Work on developing your vocabulary . Read word power made easy and editorial to improve vocabulary. Make flash cards of the words that appear new to you while reading . Read and revise the flash cards very often.
- To boost your vocabulary, enjoy what you read. Do not consider it a relentless chore.
- Summarize your readings with clarity.
- Reach every part of a given text. Do not skip any parts, however minor they may seem.
- Discuss your readings and their interpretations with your friends as it will help for your GDPI too.
