Mode of transportation affects the travel experience and can produce new types of travel writing and new ways of understanding identity. It influences the kinds and duration of social encounters, the experience of space and time, and what travellers come to know and write about.
American automotive or road narratives of the 1920s illustrate this connection. These accounts often describe male protagonists discovering themselves through journeys. They emphasise the independence of road travel and the value of rural folk traditions. The road offers freedom of movement and opportunities for encounters beyond familiar surroundings; it is more than a means of reaching a destination.
Travel writing has also attracted attention because of its relationship to empire building. Scholars have observed connections between European and American political, economic and administrative ambitions and representations of foreign places in travel books. Such descriptions can promote, justify or challenge colonial practices.
Studies of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century exploration narratives about South America and Africa examine the conventions through which travellers present unfamiliar landscapes and peoples. An apparently personal account of a journey can therefore reveal broader assumptions about authority and possession. These readings show that travel literature may express individual freedom while also participating in the political ideas of its time.
- It argued that independence was possible only for male travellers.

- It treated travellers’ identities as fixed and unaffected by journeys.
- It celebrated the freedom and independence associated with road travel.
