Always verify application and examination updates from the official CAT notification.
CAT is conducted in three slots on the same day. Slot 1: 8:30–10:30 AM · Slot 2: 12:30–2:30 PM · Slot 3: 4:30–6:30 PM. Reporting is typically 90 minutes before the slot start.
CAT 2026 Exam Pattern
CAT tests candidates across three major sections. The exact 2026 distribution should always be treated as subject to the official format.
VARC
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension — read, interpret and critically analyse written material.
- Reading Comprehension
- Para Summary & Para Completion
- Para Jumbles & Odd Sentence Out
- Main idea, inference, tone, purpose
- Logical flow of paragraphs
DILR
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning — relationships, constraints and complex sets.
- Arrangements & scheduling
- Tables, graphs, caselets
- Routes & networks
- Games & tournaments
- Distribution, ranking, Venn diagrams
QA
Quantitative Aptitude — concepts applied under time pressure.
- Arithmetic: percentages, ratios, TSD, work
- Algebra: equations, functions, logs
- Geometry & mensuration
- Number system: factors, remainders
- Modern maths: P&C, probability, sets
CAT 2026 Expected Paper Structure
Based on the recent CAT format: a 2-hour computer-based examination with separate sectional time limits.
| Section | Recent structure | Time |
|---|---|---|
| VARC | 24 questions | 40 minutes |
| DILR | 22 questions | 40 minutes |
| QA | 22 questions | 40 minutes |
| Total | 68 questions | 120 minutes |
Recent marking: +3 for a correct answer, −1 for an incorrect MCQ. TITA / non-MCQ questions do not carry the standard negative marking for a wrong response.
CAT 2026 Preparation Strategy
CAT preparation is not about completing hundreds of chapters. The goal is to identify the right questions, solve them accurately and manage 40 minutes intelligently.
Learn → Practice → Test → Analyse → Improve → Repeat
Phase 1 — Build concepts
Strengthen the fundamentals of QA, VARC and DILR. Do not rush into difficult mocks while basic concepts are still weak.
Phase 2 — Topic tests
After learning each topic, solve timed questions from that area. Track accuracy, attempts, time per question and weak topics.
Phase 3 — Sectional tests
Start solving 40-minute VARC, DILR and QA sectional tests. This teaches something chapter practice cannot: question selection.
Phase 4 — CAT mocks
Take full-length CAT mocks regularly. Taking mocks alone will not improve your percentile. The biggest improvement comes from analysing:
- Questions you got wrong
- Questions you should have attempted
- Questions you should have skipped
- Questions where you spent too much time
Phase 5 — Previous CAT papers
Actual CAT questions are one of the best resources for understanding the level and style of the examination. Don’t just solve previous papers. Study them.
- What types of questions repeat?
- Which concepts are repeatedly tested?
- Which questions look difficult but are actually manageable?
- Where does CAT trap students into wasting time?
CAT Actual Papers & Previous Year Questions
Previous CAT questions should form a major part of your CAT 2026 preparation. Use the CAT Actual Papers Questions resource to practise questions from previous examinations and understand how CAT tests concepts differently from standard textbook questions.
CAT 2026 Score vs Percentile
One of the most common questions among aspirants is: How many marks do I need for 99 percentile in CAT?
There is no permanent marks-to-percentile conversion. CAT percentile depends on paper difficulty, candidate performance, slot difficulty, normalisation and overall score distribution.
Instead of preparing for one fixed raw score, build enough ability to perform across different paper difficulty levels. Use the CAT Scores vs Percentiles tracker for detailed analysis.
CAT 2026 Cutoffs
CAT cutoffs vary significantly across colleges and candidate categories. Also remember: minimum qualifying CAT cutoff ≠ actual percentile needed for admission.
An institute may publish a minimum percentile required to be considered for the next stage, while the effective percentile of shortlisted candidates can be substantially higher.
Final admission chances can also depend on CAT score, sectional percentiles, Class 10 / 12 / graduation marks, academic background, work experience, diversity factors, WAT/GD and Personal Interview performance.
Check the dedicated CAT Cutoffs resource before deciding your target percentile.
What is a good CAT 2026 percentile?
There is no single “good CAT percentile.” Your target depends on your profile and target colleges. A student targeting the most competitive IIMs should generally aim significantly higher than the published minimum qualifying cutoffs.
Instead of asking “what percentile is good?”, ask: what percentile do I need for my target colleges and my profile? That is the number your CAT preparation should be built around.
Use the G Strategy
CAT is not only a test of knowledge. It is a test of decision making under pressure. Cetking’s G Strategy focuses on analysing questions and answer choices intelligently, using elimination wherever appropriate and avoiding unnecessary calculations. This is particularly useful when two options look close, or when solving conventionally would consume too much time.
CAT 2026 Weekly Targets
A plan is useful only when it converts into action. Use Login & Weekly Targets to organise preparation into measurable weekly goals. Instead of “I have to complete CAT,” ask: what exactly must I finish this week?

CAT 2026 FAQs
When is CAT 2026?
CAT 2026 is scheduled for 29 November 2026.
What is the last date to register for CAT 2026?
The CAT 2026 registration deadline has been extended to 22 September 2026 at 5 PM. Apply on the official portal at iimcat.ac.in.
How many sections are there in CAT?
CAT has three major sections: VARC, DILR and QA.
How long is the CAT exam?
The recent CAT format has a total duration of 120 minutes, with 40 minutes per section.
Is there negative marking in CAT?
In the recent CAT pattern, a correct answer carries +3 marks. Incorrect MCQs attract −1 mark, while TITA / non-MCQ questions do not have the standard negative marking for incorrect answers.
What is the CAT 2026 syllabus?
CAT does not work like a school examination with a narrowly prescribed chapter-wise syllabus. Preparation is generally organised around VARC, DILR and QA topics based on the examination pattern and previous CAT papers.
Is CAT difficult?
CAT is competitive rather than simply difficult. Many questions are solvable, but candidates must decide which questions to attempt and which to leave within strict sectional time limits.
How should I start preparing for CAT 2026?
Start with fundamentals in QA, VARC and DILR. Move to topic tests, sectional tests and previous CAT questions, and then gradually increase the frequency of full-length mocks.
Are previous CAT papers important?
Yes. Previous CAT questions are among the most useful preparation resources because they reveal the actual style, difficulty and reasoning expected in the examination.
How many mocks should I take for CAT 2026?
There is no magic number. Mock analysis matters more than simply accumulating attempts. Take enough mocks to identify recurring weaknesses, improve question selection and develop a stable examination strategy.
What CAT percentile is required for IIMs?
There is no single IIM cutoff. Cutoffs vary by institute, category and admission stage. Published minimum qualifying cutoffs should not be confused with the effective percentile required to receive an interview call or convert admission.
How many slots does CAT 2026 have?
Three slots on 29 November 2026: Slot 1 (8:30–10:30 AM), Slot 2 (12:30–2:30 PM) and Slot 3 (4:30–6:30 PM). Allocation is by the conducting IIM; scores are normalised across slots.
